Chinese company Sugon shows computing cluster with 100,000 home-grown AI chips
China's Sugon is showing its Sugon 8000: a computing cluster that links 100,000 computing cards made in China. The system combines AI with classic supercomputing and, according to Sugon, has already run ten research projects.

One-gram wireless microscope follows thousands of brain cells in freely moving mice
Chinese researchers built a one-gram microscope that a mouse wears on its head. Without cables, it films the activity of more than 8,500 brain cells at once while the mouse walks around, swims and interacts with other mice.

Chinese company MiniMax releases fast and cheap AI model for agents
The Chinese AI company MiniMax has released M3.1 Flash, a model for AI agents that carry out tasks on their own. According to MiniMax, it is almost three times as fast as its predecessor and an agent task costs 70 per cent less. Independent tests will now follow.

Robot arm with artificial skin feels where it is touched, even without looking
Researchers in Hong Kong built a robot arm with a soft skin that feels touch over almost the whole arm. This lets the arm balance a ball and stop when a hand is in the way, even when its camera sees nothing.

Made-up company data with a known answer teaches AI agents to analyse better
Researchers from Meituan and Chinese universities build fake worlds full of messy files, and they know exactly what lies behind them. That makes it possible to check whether an AI agent really draws the right conclusion. A model that practised with them became clearly better at data analysis.

Lid insert with a sunlight catalyst takes the stink out of the bin
Chinese researchers have built a transparent insert for the lid of a wheelie bin. A lens focuses sunlight onto a cheap catalyst, which breaks down the sour smell of rotting waste. In an outdoor test it did so for more than 40 days in a row.

Substance from the beech mushroom makes salt taste much saltier
Chinese researchers found three small protein fragments in the beech mushroom that make salt water taste saltier, the strongest by almost 71 per cent. AI helped with the search. The next step is to test them in real food, and to find out how much salt can then be left out.

Printed brain-inspired chip dissolves in six minutes after use
Researchers in China have printed a flexible chip that, like our brain, calculates and remembers in the same place. It recognises handwritten digits almost as well as ordinary software and dissolves in six minutes after use.

Charging as fast as refuelling: cars with megawatt charging are coming to Europe
Chinese carmakers are bringing cars to Europe that charge almost fully in nine minutes, such as the Denza Z9 GT and the new BYD Atto 8. They need much more powerful charging points. These are now being built across Europe.
